Match Report
The Lions had to begin the 2017-2018 National League 2 campaign with the longest trip of the season to Ayrshire, but got the win against the Tornadoes with 68-80 (half-time 32-48).
In the beginning, the team was still a bit rusty from both the pre-season and the trip. The home side took advantage of that, finishing the 1st quarter being up by 15-13. The 2nd quarter proved to be a different story though, with some good pressure on the ball by the guards that led to steals and some easy baskets that gave the Lions a double-digit difference towards the end of the half. Ayrshire looked like they couldn't get back in the game, apart from a point in the beginning of the 4th quarter where after hitting three consecutive three-pointers, they managed to bring the gap down to 6 points. But that turned out the closest they got, with the Lions quickly going up by double-digits to finish the game.
All the guards (Mat, Donatas, Arthur, Mike) helped massively with their solid defence on the opponents point-guards. Dionysis also contributed a lot organising the team and being one of the three players in double figures with 12 points. Karlis brought a lot of energy from the bench and had some great hustle plays as usual and gave us an amazing (literally) over-the-top hook. Kerim, Valts, Hugh also helped when needed. The "Spaniard" scored most of his 16 points in the first half to help the team take the lead, while trying to stop the Tornadoes' best player at the other end of the court. However, both the MVP and the DotG award go to Tommy, who was... relieved to shatter the all-time scoring club record on his Lions' debut, with 35 points, including 5 threes.
